Coffee Pot 1 - Ethan 0

Tuesday began like many other Tuesdays have at our house. Josh was home from work and we were planning on having some friends visit in the afternoon. I sent Emma up to wake Josh up around 8:30 to help me straighten up the house for our guests.

Josh came down and we got into our routine to feed everyone and start our day. I turned the oven on to start making cinnamon buns for breakfast. Josh started his little one cup coffee pot. I do not like coffee so Josh has this little coffee maker that makes coffee directly into a travel mug.

Josh went back into the living room to wait for his coffee to brew and Emma asked me for some juice. I went back into the kitchen and Ethan followed me in. I turned away from him to get the juice out of the frig and then I heard him scream. I turned and I don't really remember what I saw or what I said. Then next thing I remember was scooping him up, feeling him hot, putting him into the sink and turning the water on. Josh was then next to me ripping off his clothes.

Ethan had pushed Emma's step stool over to the counter and climbed up on it to reach the counter. He pulled the coffee cup over and it spilled over the counter and then down the front of him.

His skin looked like he had a terrible, peeling sunburn. Ethan was just inconsolable and just wanted to be held. Josh tried to call the doctor but it was busy. We decided it was best to have him checked and got everyone into the car and take him to Hasbro Children's Hospital. Emma was wonderful through this whole time. She is three and acts like a three year old quite often. Not on this day though, she did everything we asked and listened really well.

We got to the hospital within about 30 minutes of the accident and they rushed us right in. I really did not think it was all that bad at this point. I thought that they might give him a shot and dress it and send us home.

The nurses came in to start his I.V. then he would have some Morphine to help with the pain. The burn doctor came in and examined him and they began to wrap his wounds. He felt much better already and this is what he looked like after:

It's tough to see your little man hurting so bad but he was so brave and strong the whole time. The doctors told us that he would have to be admitted to the hospital to help with is pain management and the changing of his dressings. It was hard to hear that but it was what was best for him. Soon we were heading up to the 4th floor to Ethan's room.

For the rest of the day they monitored Ethan and made sure he was comfortable. Everyone there was so wonderful to us and really took wonderful care of little man.
Soon Ethan was moving around and walking the halls. He ended up finding the toy room, it really didn't take him all that long. I had to chase him around with his I.V. pole while he tried everything out. He was naming everything he knew and it was great to see him feeling so much better already.

One of the nurses, that wasn't even Ethan's nurse, nicknamed him "the mayor". He would just walk around saying, "Hi"to all the babies and anyone else he bumped into.

I stayed with him that night and he slept fantastically. When he woke up the next morning we began the wait to for the dressing change. Josh and I were really nervous about it. We knew that it would hurt Ethan and we were scared to see what it looked like.

Just after lunch it was time and we went into the treatment room. Ethan didn't like it at all but soon it was over. We were so relieved to see that the doctors were able use a new product on Ethan. It looked like a large sheet of felt and it had silver embedded in it. Keith, the Physician's Assistant, and Dr. Harrington explained to us that bacteria cannot grow where ever there is silver. Once they applied the sheet to Ethan's burn it would stick and harden. He can keep this bandage on for 10 days to 2 weeks.

This was great news. Before we were going to have to go through that painful dressing change everyday and a visiting nurse was going to have to come to do it. Now we could just take care of him on our own and he could be discharged that day.

Before we knew it we were on our way home with our little man.
It was the best feeling. Our little family could be back together and Ethan could heal at home. Ethan adores Emma and could not wait to be with her. The next morning, he tried to cuddle his sister while they ate their breakfast.
Luckily, Ethan should recover just fine from this. The doctor said that when we go to see him in 2 weeks most of the burn should be healed. Their might be one spot on his side that might take a little longer but he will be well very soon.

Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers for our little man. He is a well loved, special little guy.

NINE MONTHS!

Ethan turned nine months on 1/24/2009Sadly this is the best picture I could get with Manny this month

The other 20 I took looked something like this:
Poor Manny

Emma's head popping up

If you haven't noticed 9 months is a pretty active age. This little man has been keeping us on our toes. I find myself saying, "Boys are different" quite often. Ethan does things like crawl with his head down and goes until he bumps into something and then pulls himself up on it, dives out of high chairs, yanks every plug out of the wall, eats Polly Pockets like its his job, and other random bad boy things.

We did take him for his check up today and he is perfect! I know we are at the parenting age now because at one point we knew all 3 of the other moms in the waiting room. Anyway his stats are:

Weight: 20 lbs 11 ozs (50%)
Height: 28 1/8 inches (50%)
Head: HUGE (off the chart)

I knew his head was still huge because I always have to buy a size up in hats. It is growing at a consistent rate though so he is fine. With all of his tumbles it is probably better that he has such a large melon on there.

Here is Ethan's top 10 trick list:
1. Eats everything! As long as it is small and/or mushy he is all over it
2. Has the pincher grasp down
3. Can say "Dada" "MA!" "Em-ma" "Yeah"
4. Waves hi and bye
5. Crawls like a crazy man
6. Pulls himself up and surfs along furniture
7. Has 7 teeth, will the 8th ever show up, ugh!?
8. Knows exactly how to push Emma's buttons
9. Takes great naps
10. He can stand all by himself (we call it, Like a big boy) for a long time and actually took a step yesterday.

He is quite amazing and hard not to love (even when he is naughty). Emma is wonderful with him still, well most of the time anyway. She gets really excited for all of his milestones as we do. We are proud parents for sure!

Milestone Catch-Up!

School really cuts into my blog-time so here is a little catch up post.

August 26, 2008
I was home with Ethan for about four and a half months. Wouldn't you know that for my first day back he discovers his toes. I guess it's okay that Josh got to see one of his tricks before me.
Oh and this picture was totally staged. This is really from September 8th but I just wanted to show you how cute he his grabbing those little toes.

August 27, 2008Ethan's first food on a spoon.
We tried rice cereal for the first time on this day. Ethan has been getting some in his bottle for the past month or so at night to help fill his little tummy up. He was not at all impressed with it. I am sure he will catch on soon though.

Random cute shot

Yesterday, he was sortof sitting on his own. As you can see, he is hunched over quite a bit but I think it still counts as sitting. He stayed like this for quite a while. Emma was very impressed with this new trick and kept asking if Ethan could do his trick again.

September 8, 2008

Today was quite a busy day for Emma, Ethan, and Josh. I had to work so Josh got to take the kids to all of their appointments today. First up was Ethan. He had his 4 month check up this morning. It was a little late, since he is about 4.5 months now, but close enough. He is growing well. He is now 16lbs. 8 ozs and 26 inches long. He is still a big guy and in the 90th percentile in all areas. Way to grow,Ethan! He also received three shots, which broke my heart that I wasn't able to be there. Josh said he took them like a big boy and stopped crying as soon as he picked him up.

Emma had a big day too. This afternoon was her first ever eye doctor appointment. Josh said that she was not at all excited to go. All the way there she was pitching a fit in the car, kicking the seat and crying. Once in the reception area she was still crying and Josh knew she was scared. Finally when they were in the exam room she began to calm down checking out all of the instruments.

She had to cover one eye and identify animal shapes on the wall. Next she put on glasses and point out pictures that were sticking out at her in 3D. Then she looked a color blind tests and traced the numbers that were in circles. She giggled the whole time and did so fantastic that she received 4 stickers! Josh and Em stopped at Target on the way home and picked out a new Woody toy (From Toy Story) for a job well done. Josh was very impressed with his little lady. When I got home from work today she told me all about it and said she can't wait to go again.

I think you are all caught up now. I will try to do better keeping up, this school thing is really holding me back.

Thanks for reading!

2 Months, yesterday!

Can you believe Ethan is 2 months already? Wasn't he just in my belly making my life completely uncomfortable? He is fitting well into our little family. We cut the tags off a while ago so we are keeping him. I feel like a "real mom" now that I have two. It is a lot busier that before Ethan came. For such a little guy he has us on our toes.

He celebrated his 2 month birthday with a trip to the doctor's office. He is growing well. He weighed 13 pounds 8 ounces and was 23.25 inches long. He is in the 95%tile for weight and head and 75th for his length so he is staying on the same path which is great. The poor guy got three shots which included a lot of screaming on his part. He turned about 6 shades of purple. He is fine now though so no worries.

His newest milestones include lots of coos and giggles. He also discovered his hand on Monday. It is so cute to watch him follow it by his face. Today he was grabbing the toys on his little gym too. My baby is growing up too fast!

Now for some pics!

One Month appointment

It's official, Ethan is a big baby! He weighed 11 lbs. 8 ozs. and was 22 inches long at his one month appointment this week. He has gained 2 lbs and grew 1.5 inches since birth! That puts him in the 95th percentile for his weight and head and 75th for his length.

For a comparison Emma weighed 10 lbs. 11 ozs and was also 22 inches.

WooHoo!

It seems that Ethan's jaundice is clearing up. Emma and I took him to the doctor this morning and he said that Ethan is looking fantastic. He has basically been gaining an ounce a day since Monday so that is great too. A few more days like that and he will be back to his birth weight soon.

Now, on a side note, can I get a little credit for getting both kiddos out of the house all by myself today. Josh went back to work this morning. I even gave Ethan a sponge bath this morning and had a visitor (Thanks for all the cute stuff Casavants). Not bad, huh?
